Boat driver arraigned in court by Lagos state government over death of 12 passengers

A boat driver identified as Happiness Elebiju has been arraigned in court by the Lagos state government over the death of 12 persons onboard his boat in Ilashe waterfront community in July.

The driver who was arraigned on a 10 count charge bordering on involuntary manslaughter on Monday August 24, was accused of causing his passengers’ death by exceeding the capacity of the boat.

Elebiju was remanded at a correctional center after pleading not guilty before Justice Josephine Oyefeso of the Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja.

Justice Oyefeso adjourned the case till Thursday August 27, for the commencement of the trial after the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Mrs Olayinka Adeyemi asked the court for time to prepare for the trial.
