The National Youth Service Corps has said due to the social distancing policy of the Federal Government, this year’s presentation of certificates to Batch B corps members, who are expected to pass out on May 28, will last 10 days.
The NYSC stated on Monday that it had mobilised officers to 10 service points in each local government area in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, to ease the distribution of certificates.
The scheme’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Mrs Adenike Adeyemi, said in a statement that the passing out of corps members on Thursday would be devoid of “ceremonial parade as a result of the great threat and danger posed by Coronavirus.”
She said, “The passing-out for the 2019 Batch B, Stream 1 corps members has been slated nationwide for Thursday, May 28. In keeping with COVID-19 protocol of social and physical distancing, the certificate of national service shall be issued to qualified corps members at the local government level.
“Accordingly, a full complement of NYSC officers have been mobilised for the distribution; and shall do so from ten service points in each of the LGA. As a precautionary measure, the distribution shall be staggered for a period of 10 days in the first instance, in order to remove anxiety from the concerned corps members.
“This is in addition to making the activity seamless and less cumbersome. Corps members passing out must remember to ensure the strictest observance of discipline added to the rules of social and physical distancing.
“There must be the use of facemask, hand sanitiser and proper washing of the hands with liquid soap for at least 20 seconds during the activity. Corps members who at present are not in their states of service need not violate the ban on inter-state journeys.”
The NYSC added that as soon as the ban was lifted, such corps members were expected to go to their respective states of service to collect their certificates.
“Kindly note that unclaimed certificates shall be returned to the NYSC National Directorate Headquarters, Abuja, two weeks after the lifting of inter-state travel ban,” the scheme added.
Meanwhile, the National Youth Service Corps has said that the passing-out ceremony for 2019 Batch B Stream 1 corps members slated for May 28 across the federation would be without fanfare in view of the raging COVID-19 pandemic.
Ekiti State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs Emmanuella Okpongete, said “corps members would be discharged and issued their Certificate of National Service without the usual fanfare at their various local government areas of service” across the country.
Okpongete, in a statement issued in Ado Ekiti on Monday by the State Head, Press and Public Relations Unit, Rose Onoja, urged employers of corps members to issue release letters to those who have completed the mandatory one-year service.
Specifically, she stated, “All corps employers across Ekiti State are to please issue ‘Letters of Release’ to corps members that serve in the organization/establishment”.
The NYSC in Ekiti State also solicited the cooperation of the road transport unions “to ensure the safety of corps members as many of them will be travelling out of Ekiti State back to their state of origin from May 30, 2020.
“Those that served in other states of the federation who are indigenes of Ekiti State will be returning to Ekiti State from all parts of the federation.
“We solicit for your kind support of all and sundry to give this information the publicity it deserves,” the NYSC state coordinator said.
