NYSC Latest News 2021 Update Portal: The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has appealed for stakeholders’ intervention to enable it address the challenges occasioned by dilapidated Orientation Camp facilities, inadequate office accommodation for State Secretariats and non-fulfilment of statutory responsibilities by some States among others.
NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim stated this in his welcome address today at the 2021 NYSC Annual Management Conference in Abuja.
The workshop with the theme; “The NYSC as a catalyst for National Unity, Integration and Peaceful Co-existence in Nigeria”, is a forum, where NYSC Top Management and other managers make thorough review of the Scheme’s operations with a view to evolving policies and strategies for improved performance.
The Director-General noted that it was the desire of the Scheme to find solutions to the myriads of challenges confronting it, that necessitated the decision of representatives of State Governments, Federal Capital Territory Administration and Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, to strongly advocate the establishment of the National Youth Service Corps Trust Fund.
He said apart from helping with provision of adequate operational infrastructure for the success of the Scheme, “the fund will make the NYSC Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) Programme, more impactful, especially through the provision of training logistics and start-up finances to actualize business plans of the Corps Entrepreneurs.”
Ibrahim said the Scheme, not only creates conditions for Corps Members to work together, but also take deliberate steps to fully integrate them into their host communities.
“The contributions of the Scheme in all spheres of national development, including education, health, infrastructural development, sports, free movement of labour, provision of free legal services, conduct of elections and job creation, amongst others, have also attracted widespread applause, both nationality and internationally.”
“I wish to acknowledge the support of critical stakeholders, and assure our commitment to working together to uphold the ideals of the Scheme and sustain its smooth operations”, he said.
The Director-General, who said the outbreak of Coronavirus disease in 2019 affected the operations of the NYSC and other organizations globally, added that the Scheme has weathered through the storm, operating effectively amidst the challenges of the COVID-19, while also ensuring strict adherence to all the safety protocols.
“We have been working closely with the Presidential Steering Committee (PSC) on COVID-19, the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), and State Ministries of Health for safe and efficient conduct of Orientation Courses and other operations of the Scheme”, the DG said.
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Alhaji Muhammed Musa Bello, represented by the Acting Secretary, Social Development Secretariat, Dr Kelvin Ike, commended the NYSC Management for its vibrancy and high level of commitment to ensuring that the Scheme sustains its relevance, especially through the innovations brought about by the Scheme in the sensitization of the general public on its activities.
The Minister for Youth and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare, who was also represented by Hajiya Amina Dauran, the Director, Network and Social Mobilisation, commended the NYSC Scheme for promoting National Integration, social development as well as mentoring youths for self reliance.
He opined that the Scheme’s operations should be in line with the current societal dynamics in view of the fact that youths are very innovative, intelligent and highly mobile segment of national population.
