Very rarely can there have been a more obvious ‘game of two halves’. Following 45 drab and disjointed minutes before the break – in which neither side forced a shot on target – a spectacular second period brought six goals: four for a much-improved Manchester United, who were also aided by Aston Villa’s defensive deficiencies. The visitors at least showed some intent to twice take the lead, but were ultimately blown away by their hosts’ fluency in the final third – particularly after the introduction of Eriksen and Garnacho.
