The internally displaced persons in Abuja, Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states have said food is their problem and not COVID-19.
The IDPs said rather than adhering to precautionary measures against the COVID-19, what was necessary was how to get jobs to earn money and feed.
The Chairman of the IDPs in New Kuchingoro area of Abuja, Emmanuel Philemon, stated these in an interview with journalists after receiving palliatives from the Otunba Adejare Adegbenro Foundation, led by a member of its Board of Trustees, Shehu Bida.
Philemon, who thanked OAAF for the items which included bags of rice, cartons of noodles and other food items, said the people living in the camps had refused to observe safety measures because they believed coronavirus was non-existent.
He said, “Two days to the lockdown, NEMA came here with two buckets. One was empty, while the other contained liquid soap. They said we should use it to wash our hands to prevent contracting coronavirus. But our people are interested in getting food.
“They do not worry about the virus. Efforts to dissuade them to maintain social distancing has been ineffective because they believe that the virus does not exist.”
