On his first day at school, Chris squares off against a bully, but also makes a new friend. Meanwhile, Chris’ dad Julius, a true penny pincher, questions how his wife Rochelle takes care of the family’s tight finances.
Rochelle hosts a neighborhood-watch meeting after someone steals Julius’ truck, but her neighbor Louise (Whoopi Goldberg) thinks she would make a better block captain than Rochelle.
When Chris does poorly on an exam, Ms Morello sends him to the school’s guidance councillor, Mr Abbott. The councillor gives Chris a series of mental evaluations and ultimately determines that he must take a remedial course.
Chris’s relief that he is not the only black person at his new high school turns to dismay when he discovers that he’s the only non-white student in his homeroom and his teacher takes an instant dislike to him. Elsewhere, Tonya gets a job at a beauty salon.
