One person was killed and five others were injured in a crash that occurred in Kajola on the Osogbo/Ilesha Road in Osun State on Thursday.
The accident occurred around 9.45am and involved two vehicles and a motorcycle.
It was gathered that the deceased was an indigene of Kajola and that one of the vehicles coming from Ilesha rammed his motorcycle.
Security agents on rescue mission had a hectic time clearing the gridlock that followed the crash on the busy road, as commuters were stranded for several hours.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Osun Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Agnes Ogungbemi, confirmed the crash.
Ogungbemi said seven people were involved in the accident, adding that five of the victims were injured, while a life was lost.
She added that one person escaped unhurt.
She explained that the driver of one of the vehicles had been handed over to the police.
“The injured victims were taken to the Owode Hospital. The corpse of the deceased has also been evacuated, has since returned to the road,” Ogungbemi stated.
Several residents mobilised to block the road in protest against the crash.
As of 5.45pm, the protesters were still barricading the road and demanding an audience with Governor Gboyega Oyetola.
Efforts to pacify them proved futile despite the presence of armed policemen and operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps at the scene.
It was learnt that the aggrieved residents attempted to lynch the driver of one of the vehicles involved in the crash, but he was rescued by policemen, who took him to their station.
The aggrieved residents said the accident would have been averted if the government had constructed speed breakers at strategic points in the town.
The spokesperson for the NSCDC, Daniel Adigun, said pleas by the security agents and some political office holders for the protesters to open the road were disregarded.
He stated, “The Sector Commander of the FRSC in the state, E. A. Asaniyan, was on the ground and assured the protesters that speed breakers and other traffic signs would be put in place to prevent crashes on the road.
“The member representing Atakumosa East and West in the Osun State House of Assembly, Babatunde Komolafe, and the Chairman, Atakumosa West Local Government Area as well as security agents also appealed to the aggrieved residents to remove the barricades. So far, they have refused all pleas.”
