Gone were the days when it was claimed that a woman’s place is in the kitchen. The narrative has changed as there are some women who are now even richer than their male counterparts.

We take a look at four of such powerful Nigerian women in the country currently.

Oby Ezekwesili

Her real name is Obiageli Ezekwesili and she is an Anambra state indigene. She holds a master’s degree from the University of Lagos in International law and Diplomacy with an additional master’s degree in Public Administration from the Kennedy Government School at Harvard University.

She was a government appointee during the Olusegun Obasanjo government. Before her appointment into government, she worked at the center for international development at Harvard.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Her father is the renowned professor, Professor James Nwoye. Chimamanda attended the staff school of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and she graduated with outstanding results.

She subsequently gained admission to study medicine and Pharmacy at the University of Nigeria but dropped out after a year and a half. She dropped out because she wanted to pursue her passion and this earned her an admission to study communications at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

So far, she is listed among the New African’s 100 most influential Africans, listed among times Magazine’s “The 100 most influential people” and she has won quite a number of awards.

Folorunsho Alakija

She is currently the richest woman in Nigeria and the second in Africa. She comes from a family of billionaires so it isn’t surprising she is the richest woman in Nigeria.

She traveled out of the country at the age of 7 to have her primary and secondary education abroad and had her studies in Secretariat Studies in the UK from the Pitman’s Central College in London.

She has several companies that include Rose of Sharon Fashion house. FAMFA oil limited, Rose of Sharon Prints and Promotions, Digital Reality Print Limited Which specializes in the design and offset printing and Dayspring Property Development Company Limited.

Ngozi Okonjo Iweala

Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala was the finance minister during the Goodluck Jonathan regime. She has been nominated by the President, President Buhari to serve as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization.

She was born in Ibadan in 1954 with both parents being professors at the University of Ibadan. However, she is a Delta State indigene.

After her secondary school education, she gained admission into Harvard University where she graduated with an AB Hons in Economics in 1977. She also holds a Ph.D. in Regional Economics and Development.

Her personal achievement so far includes being the first female finance minister and foreign affairs minister in Nigeria.

She is the first female and black candidate to contest for the presidency of the world bank and at her time as the finance minister, she led the negotiation team that led to the cancelation of Nigeria’s debt of $30billion.
