It has taken the best part of two years, but Manchester United finally have their man.
United have agreed a deal with Borussia Dortmund over the transfer of English forward Jadon Sancho from the Signa Iduna Park to Old Trafford.
The Red Devils forked out £73 million for Sancho’s signature, making him the second most expensive British player in history. The most expensive British player remains Harry Maguire, who joined United from Leicester City a couple of summers ago.
Can Sancho’s arrival propel United to the Premier League title next season?
It comes as no surprise that the odds on United winning the Premier League title have gone shorter on football betting sites like 1xBet following Sancho’s arrival, but can Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men actually deliver on the pitch?
Manchester United are getting a high quality player.
Sancho’s numbers from his time in the Bundesliga are mighty impressive. He scored 50 goals and had 57 assists in his 137 appearances for Dortmund, and was named in the Bundesliga Team of the Season in 2019 and 2020.
Prior to Sancho’s arrival, United’s premier front men were Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood.
Sancho is definitely an upgrade on Greenwood and is expected to operate from the right side of the United attack.
The Englishman also adds good depth to the squad- a vital ingredient in a Premier League title challenge.
With Sancho, Manchester United look very formidable in attack. However, as history has shown, you need more than a great attack to win league titles.
Sancho’s arrival is great for United, but there’s still plenty of work to be done in the transfer market if they are to knock fierce rivals and neighbours, Manchester City off their perch.
There are still question marks over United’s backline, with uncertainty surrounding the long-term partner to Maguire.
Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly will have their good moments, but they are also prone to errors. United have to find better alternatives if they are serious about a sustained title bid.
There is talk of Raphael Varane potentially joining the Red Devils, while Villarreal’s Spanish defender, Pau Torres has also been linked with a move to Old Trafford.
If United can sign up one of these targets, they would have gone a long way in tightening that defence.
They can also do with another defensive midfielder, with Fred not particularly convincing in that department.
Solskjaer has had his critics, but there have definitely been signs of progress in the team over the last couple of years. There are still a few dissenting voices around Old Trafford, but the general belief is that Solskjaer is stirring the side in the right direction.
The Norwegian led United to three cup semi-finals in his first full season in charge, while he guided them to a second-place finish in the league and a Europa League final during the last campaign.
One thing is for sure: Solskjaer has got the full backing of the United hierarchy. He was given money to spend last summer, splashing a record fee on Maguire, and from the look of things, he will be spending even more to strengthen the team in the coming weeks.
Time will tell whether United’s heavy investments in the transfer market will deliver a first Premier League title in the post-Ferguson era next season.
